arbara, my wife of 45 years,  and I have two daughters, Patricia and Colleen.  Pat and her husband Jim live in Connecticut.  Col and her husband Mike live in Stony Point with their children, Aston (4) and Morgan (2).

Barbara worked as a legal secretary primarily in Westchester and Rockland and I retired as a Lieutenant from NYCPD in 1994 after 33 years with the Department.  My time with the Department included assignments as diverse foot patrol in the south Bronx in the 60s to a stint as a section commander in the Intelligence Division from 80 to 85. It was during the Intel assignment that I was first exposed to and learned technically demanding surveillance and investigative photography.  From 85 to 1990, while on leave from the PD, I was appointed Assistant Commissioner for Traffic Enforcement and then Executive Director of the NYC Emergency Medical Services.

While working at the PD I received a BA from Fordham and an MS from Columbia.  My last three years with the PD involved the managing the 911 communications project, taking it from inception to award.

On retiring from the PD, I worked for MCI (before it became Worldcom) and then was kept busy as a self employed public safety communications consultant.  My last communications project, from 1998 to 2000 was in the UK.  I was retained by Serco Limited, a European call center company, to evaluate and help modernize the communications system of the Greater London Metropolitan Police Department.

In 2000 we sold our home outside Princeton, NJ, bought a 33 foot Winnebago motor home, attached our Toyota to the back and explored the Dakotas, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, etc.

We bought our home in Cornwall toward the end of 2001.  After settling in and seeing the natural beauty of this area, I decided to try to capture some of these images.  I quickly learned that capturing really good landscape images required much more than technical proficiency, it required an ability to SEE the many different qualities of light and a grounding in graphics and composition. I studied the work and writing of successful landscape photographers, e.g. John Shaw, Lee Frost, Bryan Peterson and the like.  It also required countless hours with a camera in the field.

In addition, several local artists and artisans have generously helped by informally judging my efforts and making suggestions.  They include Paul and Bill Gould, Nick Zungolli, Don Fowler, Sue Akins and the Clearwaters.  I am grateful for their time and kind comments.

When thinking about shooting a landscape, I usually concentrate on two things; the  first consideration is the quality of the light and second is the simplicity of the image.  I’ve been fortunate in that my work has  been received competitive recognition.  Among the more recent was 2006 Print of the Year from the Dutchess Regional Professional Photographer’s Association and acceptance in Photowork ‘07, a juried exhibition at Poughkeepsie’s Barrett Art Center.

Recent changes in photography have compelled me to add a Canon 5D digital to my photo gear.
